Cellcom First Division Week 1 Round-up: BYC Flies High, Champions Nimba United Held

The 2015/16 Cellcom First Division League began this weekend with five exciting matches across the country.

In the only game on Saturday, Watanga FC came from behind twice to force a 2-2 draw against LISCR FC at the ATS. Chris Jackson handed LISCR the lead in the 10th minute, but Abraham Kwateh leveled for Watanga 14 minutes later. Dominic Jlateh restored LISCR lead in the 55th minute, but new boy Kelvin Potis came from the bench to cancel out that lead in the 70th minute.

Sunday matches began with two first division debutants ELWA United and Holder FC playing to a 2-2 draw at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium. Tronkon Saykiameh gave ELWA United the lead in the 3rd minute before he saw red card in 17th minute. Justino Jackson leveled for Holder FC on the stroke of half time. Ernest Toe restored ELWA lead, but Justino Jackson headed in the equalizer in the 90th minute to deny ELWA United a win.

At the same venue, Barrack Young Controllers thrashed Keitrace FC 4-0 to become league leaders. Junior Barshall opened the scoring as early as the 2nd minute. Mark Payne and Prince Saydee added their names on the score sheet before Junior Barshall completed his brace in the 75th minute.

At the North Star Soccer Stadium in Mount Barclay, defending champions Nimba United had to settle for a 2-2 draw at home against LPRC Oilers. Adetu Evanonye put the Mountaineers ahead in the 12th minute but Andrew Dorley equalized for Oilers in the 25th minute. After the break, Mulbah Freeman pull Oilers ahead in the 52nd minute but his celebration was short-lived as Edward Dean equalized for Nimba United three minutes later.

In Gbarnga, Bong County, newly promoted first division club Mighty Dragons were narrowly defeated 1-0 by FC Fassell. An eighth minute goal by Kesselly Kamara was enough to send the Soccer Missionaries to second place on the Cellcom First Division Week 1 Standings.
