Second Division Day 2 Recap: United Remains Perfect; Dragons Fly on Top

By Kolubah Zayzay and Varflay Kamara

Match Day 2 of the 2014/2015 Cellcom Second Division League was in full swing over the weekend in several venues across the country as ELWA United maintained their perfect start to the season to top Group A and newly promoted side Mighty Dragons won on their debut to the division to top Group B.

In Group A matches, ELWA United travelled to Unification Town and came back with a 1-0 win after defeating last year’s First Division relegated team Mighty Blue Angels.

In Group A matches previously played on Saturday, Small Town FC bounced back from their 0-2 loss to United on opening day to defeat newly promoted side Joy Conquerors 1-0 at the ATS.

In the other Group A match, another newly promoted side Sesay FC completed their second successive draw after holding BYC II to a scoreless tie.

With those results, ELWA United leads Group A with six points followed by Small Town FC at two points.

In Group B matches played yesterday, the newly promoted Bong County based second division team Mighty Dragons started their debut season on a good footing by defeating Nimba FC 2-0 at the Cuttington University Sports Pitch in Bong County.

Played under a good atmosphere and handled with care by center referee David Kollie, most of the actions in the game took place in the midfield where the Dragons had majority of the possessions.

The home side registered the first goal in the 15th minute through midfielder Lawson Fallah via a 35-yard free kick which gave the Nimba FC’s keeper no chance.

Nimba FC had two chances to score the equalizer but the Dragons held on to their 1-0 lead going into the break.

Back from break, the Dragons exerted some pressure and it paid off in the 60th minute when striker Zoetaye Wongar was allowed time and space to power in a terrific header to give his side a two-goal lead and the maximum three points.

With that win, the Dragons climbed on top of the Group B table with three points from one match as Garnersville FC and Holders FC played to a 1-1 tie in the other Group B match.
