Liberia to Host the 2016 WAFU Nations Cup in Honor of President Sirleaf

Liberia has been selected to host this year’s West African Football Union Nations Tournament known as the WAFU Cup. This year’s WAFU Cup will be held in Liberia in honor of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

According to a release from the Liberia Football Association (LFA), the General Assembly of the West African Football Union (WAFU), held on February 17, 2016 in Dakar, Senegal, unanimously agreed to hold its annual football tournament in honor of President Sirleaf as a tribute to her excellent leadership in Africa.

The tournament will kick off in Monrovia on October 29th, the birthday of the Liberian President and it is expected to involve all the 16 member nations as participants.

LFA President Musa Bility who is also 1st Vice President of WAFU said he is glad that his request for WAFU to play the tournament in honor of President Sirleaf was accepted and he has assured WAFU that the country is ready to host the 16-nation regional event.

Mr. Bility said all the technical, material and financial details are being worked on between the LFA and the WAFU Secretariat for a successful hosting of the tournament in October.
